Sounds like a fun kit for a science loving kid!
I learned that: Bright colors have not been proven to attract adult mosquitoes, but strong smells like perfumes, scented soaps, and lotions do. Standing water sources and hot exhaled gases also attract mosquitoes.
I often wear a strong lemon verbena scent. They hate that!
They also stay away when I take kyolic garlic capsules regularly.

We are never ready for mosquito season - but are stocking up on bug spray :)
